About ABC
The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a world renowned trekking route. It steadily takes elevation from 820m (Pokhara), Nayapul (1070 m) to 4130 m (Annapurna Base Camp). The trail to Annapurna Base Camp is accessible from several trailheads. The duration to complete the trek depends on the route. A complete journey to Annapurna Base Camp from Pokhara can take between 6 to 12 days.
Annapurna Base Camp is surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the world; Annapurna I (8091 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Dhaulagiri (8167 m), the fishtail Machapuchhre (6993 m)and Hiunchuli (6441 m). Spectacular views of these high Himalayas can be witnessed on the trail itself. The highlight of the Annapurna Base Camp trek is the diversity of natural landscapes, terrains and culture experienced on the journey.
Annapurna Base Camp trek (ABC trek) is a moderate trek that begins from lowlands to the high himalayas. The elevation above 3000 m starts from Dovan after which most of the trail lies above 3000- 4000 m altitude. The direct route to the base camp is through Australian Base Camp, Landruk and Deurali. Since the base camp lies within the Annapurna Sanctuary, trekkers often combine different trekking routes to the usual ABC route. The trek can be combined with the Poonhill trek to Ghorepani which leads to Tadapani and Annapurna Base Camp. Depending on the pace of the trekker, the hike will continue for 5 to 6 hours daily. Annapurna Circuit trek and Mardi Himal trek are other alternative routes that can be easily combined with the Annapurna Base Camp trek.
Gurung and Chhetri communities are the most prevalent in the Annapurna area. Several homestays of the community alongside teahouses can be found in the route. The warm hospitality of the community and their incredible culture is what makes the Annapurna Base Camp trek so vibrant and unique. The region is also popular for adventurous activities like cycling, marathon, horse riding and some epic traditions like honey hunting.
Trail conditions are excellent with mostly stone paved stairways and plenty of tea shops along the way at places like Sinuwa, Bamboo, Dovan, Himalaya, and Deurali.
